What the heck is The Epic?
The Epic is a working name for what will become the most incredible city health/wellness/recreation/library/waterpark in America. Votes passed a 1/4 cent sales tax to build this project in May 2014. It also will include: an amphitheater, Texas’ largest all-inclusive playground, trails, grand lawn, and other park amenities.
How do I let the City know about my desires?
The city will be criss-crossing the City with a series of public meetings, called Epic Encounters. It is for YOU to leave your footprint on this legacy project. In addition, public comments can be sent to our website: www.JoinTheEpic.com. Together, we can make it EPIC!
When do you expect opening?
While this type of project is really a ground breaking project, we are currently looking at a May 2017 opening. However, we will keep you updated as dates may change as we enter more indepth study and design of the project.
Where is The Epic going to be located?
It will be at Central Park in Grand Prairie. Located very conveniently off of the George Bush Tollway, beween Arkansas and Warrior. The Summit parking will not be affected as entrance to The Epic will be off of either Arkansas and Warrior.
How big will The Epic be?
While still in planning changes, Epic Enounters, our citizen meetings will help pull together a master wish list. Then, in working with the nation’s leading Architects, we will begin looking at costs, sizes and opportunities. At the outset, we see a recreation center/wellness/library/enrichment center at 120,000 sf. an indoor water park at 50,000sf and about 3 acres of outside water attraction.
Indoor Water! Really?
We literally will have a water park that could open every day of the year! While, we know that wouldn’t happen, it can provide hours of fun, fitness, and family fellowship all year long. We will be bringing America’s greatest water park minds to assist in this area.
What will the recreation center include?
We are projecting gyms, fitness class rooms, art areas, recording and rehearsal spaces, library, non-fixed seating theater, indoor playground, life enrichment areas, exteme sport opportunities, and a myriad of attractions for all ages!
Who is the Architect?
As of June 4, 2014, the Request for Qualifications (RFQs) have been received. The Staff will immediately begin thoroughly reviewing and scoring the applications. We expect the City Council to award the lead Architect contract in Summer of 2014.
What will the fees be?
Obviously, like all Recreation Centers and Water Parks, there will be fees to help offset operations of the facilities. That process will begin as we refine the project, concur on the scope, and begin the design process. Rest assured it will be an open process, that will go through your Parks and Recreation Board and City Council.
Is the Parks Board open for suggestions?
Not only are they open for suggestions, they COVET THEM! The Parks Board meets every 4th Wednesday at 6:30pm at the Grand Prairie Parks, Arts and Recreation Bulding at 400 College Street in Grand Prairie (in back of City Hall). Please call Mary D. Cerda, at 972.237.8100 to verify dates and times (Parks Board often does not meet in July). There is always a public comment section on each and every agenda. No advance registration is required.
Who is the project for:
Everyone! We expect all ages will enjoy this project and all the new amenities. The Amphitheater will be the new home of the Grand Prairie Arts’ Council’s widely popular April Concert in the Park series. Families will enjoy the grand lawn, additional trails, and water based recreation. No one is too young or too old for The Epic!
