Join Today for a Healthy Tomorrow

By | Epic Extras

If your goal is to get healthier or more active, a 2017 study from Iowa State University confirms a gym membership is a start in the right direction.

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Physical Activity Guidelines recommends adults get at least 150 minutes per week of moderate-intensity aerobic activity or 75 minutes per week of vigorous aerobic activity, including two days of strength training.

The researchers found that “75 percent of study participants with gym memberships, compared to 18 percent of non-members, met the guidelines for both types of activity”. Other member health benefits included:

  • Lower odds of being obese – weight loss is a main reason for joining a gym
  • Smaller waist circumference – about 1.5 inches less for men and a similar trend for women
  • Lower resting heart rate – about five beats lower than non-members
  • Higher cardiorespiratory fitness – this measures heart strength, lung function, blood circulation and muscle mass

Researcher Duck-chul Lee said “Gym members were 14 times more aerobically active than non-members and 10 times more likely to meet muscle-strengthening guidelines, regardless of their age and weight.”

The Epic Culinary Kitchen – The Kitchen Table

By | Epic Extras

I have always believed that the kitchen table is the heart of the home. Where everything and everyone comes together, where problems are discussed and hopefully solved, where celebrations occur, where love is shared in happy or sad times, and when you have something exciting to share.  Well, I am excited to share that a community member called and asked if she could use “our” kitchen tables to announce the launching of her new book, Get off the Struggle Bus, by: Jamese Willis. I hope you will come out and meet Jamese and spend time listening to her speak.

Jamese will showcase her book in The Epic Culinary Kitchen on Saturday September 28 from 3:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m.

You may pre order her book here.

People can pre-order the book at 25% off. After the 28th it will be $20 via lulu.com

More times than I’d like to remember I’ve been asked the question: “Why are you still single?” My answer was always: “I don’t know.” After going through all the reasons why I shouldn’t be single I’d try to jump into the dating world with no success. Have you ever been there? You’ve done everything you think you could and thought: ‘Why am I being punished?’ Good News: You’re not being punished rather you’re being prepared and refined. I had to realize that singleness is truly a gift and I needed to live without worry. This book is chuck full of crazy dating stories, come to Jesus moments and comedy. If you’re tired of riding the struggle bus of singleness take this journey with me and ride in purpose. Jamese Willis

Upcoming at The Epic Culinary Kitchen – It’s So Vegan

By | Epic Extras

There are many creative and interesting people that surround us in our daily lives.  I think that if most of us would slow down to really observe and talk occasionally we would all be amazed at how fascinating the world around us really is.

One of the many benefits of working in the culinary industry through The Epic is the unique individuals that reach out to be a part of our program. I am truly blessed to be in a position that attracts others who have a love of cooking, tasting, and experiencing food in ways beyond just the act of eating.

Amiya is among many chefs who are making food prepared from unique ingredients comfortable for the rest of us.  Making a name for herself as the queen of Vegan Soul food she will make her initial appearance in our culinary kitchen this coming Monday evening.  Her class is filling quickly so I do encourage you to reserve or purchase your tickets soon.

I hope you will come out to be educated, to laugh, to taste, and to really experience her passion which is Vegan Soul Food.

Enjoy the food you bring into your life

Healthy Habits – Start Today #JoinTheEpic

By | Epic Extras

If you have been thinking about improving your health and well-being, start today by joining The Epic! According to the American Heart Association, only about one in five adults and teens get enough exercise to maintain good health. That statistic may be shocking, but adding just 150 mins of moderate-intensity exercise to your routine per week can drastically improve your long-term health.

The recommendations listed below are from the Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans, 2nd edition, published by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion:

Recommendations for Adults

  • Get at least 150 minutes per week of moderate-intensity aerobic activity or 75 minutes per week of vigorous aerobic activity, or a combination of both, preferably spread throughout the week.
  • Add moderate to high-intensity muscle-strengthening activity (such as resistance or weights) on at least 2 days per week.
  • Spend less time sitting. Even light-intensity activity can offset some of the risks of being sedentary.
  • Gain even more benefits by being active at least 300 minutes (5 hours) per week.
  • Increase amount and intensity gradually over time.

Recommendations for Kids

  • Children 3-5 years old should be physically active and have plenty of opportunities to move throughout the day.
  • Kids 6-17 years old should get at least 60 minutes per day of moderate- to vigorous-intensity physical activity, mostly aerobic.
  • Include vigorous-intensity activity on at least 3 days per week.
  • Include muscle- and bone-strengthening (weight-bearing) activities on at least 3 days per week.
  • Increase amount and intensity gradually over time.
